Chapter 6

     The final chapter.

A brief summary of this chapter; the chapter starts with Lennie having a vision of his Aunt Clara and a gigantic rabbit, both yelling at him, this is a way of him understanding that he has done something wrong. The chapter ends with George finding Lennie and telling him about the farm house they plan on buying. George does this in order to distract Lennie and bring him to a better  place for hope.  This also gives George the  strength and courage to point the gun to the back of Lennie`s head, pulls the trigger and kills Lennie.

How this chapter ties into my theme is by showing how individuals with mental disabilities are influenced by their crazy imagination and visions as Steinbeck illustrates in this novel.

Chapter 5

A short summary of this chapter; Lennie and Curley's wife talk in the barn, Lennie starts to playfully stroke Curley's wife's hair after she invites him to. But when Curley's wife tells Lennie to stop, he does not which causes her to panic, Lennie also panics and his fear takes over he loses control and snaps her neck instantly killing her. Lennie runs away afraid. When everyone finds what has happened they plan a man hunt for Lennie and decide that if they see Lennie to shoot him in the stomach so he will have a slow and painful death.

This chapter ties into my theme by displaying how Lennie's mental disabilities make loss his control over his strength. Like most people with mental disabilities they have no control over their true abilities. Another example of my theme in this chapter is how Lennie is instantly amused by something soft, like how a young child is amused by a soft pet, thus proving that Lennie's mental abilities are of a small child.

Chapter 4

A quick and brief summary of this chapter; Lennie enters Crooks' room and Crooks talks to Lennie about how Lennie would feel if something happened to George while he was away in town and never returned. This makes Lennie upset and angry because it leads him to believe that George is not coming back.  At this point Candy enters the room and the three men start to talk. Suddenly Curley's wife arrives as well and Crooks kicks her out of his room.  She is angry and threatens to have Crooks hung .

This ties into my theme by, Crooks and Lennie were talking, Lennie would always say something off topic and when Crooks would ask him something, for example when Crooks tells Lennie about his childhood all Lennie thinks about is when will the puppies be old enough to pet.

Chapter 3

A brief summary of this chapter; what happened first is that George and Slim talk for a bit. Then Carlson asks Candy to put his dog down, and in the end they decide that Carlson will kill the poor old dog. At the end of the chapter Curley accuses Slim of sleeping with his wife which ends with Lennie and Curley having a  fight and Lennie taking a few punches from Curley. George is upset and tells Lennie to let Curley have it. Lennie destroys Curley's hand by squeezing it into a piece clump of skin and bone.

How this ties into my theme is that it shows how people with mental disabilities have no control over their strength. This is evident by Lennie destroying Curley's hand. However not all people with mental disabilities lose control over their strength. For example a student from my grade school had complete control over his strength even though he suffers from autism  and dyslexia.

Chapter 2

A short summary of this chapter; first George and Lennie arrive at the ranch, where they then meet the boss. Then they meet the old man named Candy, who only has one hand and his extremely old dog. They meet the grumpy little man named Curley, who has a hatred for big guys like Lennie. George then tells Lennie to stay away from Curley at all times. Suddenly Curley's wife walks into the buck house looking for Curley. At that instant George immediately knows that she is big trouble. Curley`s wife is a very pretty women and as soon as she leave George tells Lennie to never go near her either.

How this chapter ties into my theme is by showing how people with mental disabilities are easily distracted. For example when George and Lennie meet Curley's wife, for the next short while all Lennie can think about is how pretty she is, and he does not snap out of it until George starts to yell at him.

Chapter 1

A quick summary of this chapter; the characters George and Lennie are introduced to the reader. They start their walk to the ranch they plan to work on, then they decide to stop for the night on the shore of a small pond that has been used as a camp site many times before. George then tells Lennie that he is not allowed to talk at the ranch and finally they eat their supper and go to bed.

How this chapter ties into my theme is by strongly displaying Lennie's mental disability, by making him look like the stupidest six year old in the history of man kind even though Lennie is probably around 25 years old. John Steinbeck does this by making Lennie talk and act like he has no clue with what is going on around him, he does this by having Lennie repeat things to himself out loud to remember things. For example when George tells Lennie to remember to not talk when they go to meet the boss/ owner of the ranch where they plan to work.

Of Mice and Men

I believe this, wonderful book strongly supports the theme of mental disability. In more ways then one. For example I believe John Steinbeck makes Lennie talk and act the way he does because, Steinbeck wants to display Lennie's handicap.
